After I went to college in North Carolina, I moved to Los Angeles. ‘Tis true, dear reader, I was born and raised in the South (Mobile, Alabama to be exact) and I am not a football fan, at all, ever. Let’s take a look back at some of our beloved, old favorites that are now gone, but definitely not forgotten. Whether we were purchasing, perusing or just passing the time, these stores became the backdrop for many of our lifelong memories. And every year we’d wait for elaborate holiday displays to adorn the huge plate glass windows. Often an emblematic feature would become part of the local lexicon – Meet me under the clock! – and the place where our life stories played out. Many of our old favorites had restaurants or mile-long candy counters that left us drooling. Need an Easter dress, back-to-school clothes or a Mardi Gras gown? Maybe you’re shopping for fancy jewelry or fancy undies? China, curtains, cosmetics? Toys, tools? Pumps? Pots? You can get it all at the department store – a gazillion square feet of possibility, ice-cold air-conditioning and lighting that always flatters. If you’re not from the South, you might think these statements refer to families who’ve moved away or maybe an old flame, but down here we know that these names all represent department stores – regional, iconic meccas for all things chic and fashionable.

Do you remember the Davison’s? I sure do miss the Kessler’s.
